Choosing grocery POS software in the UAE: a practical checklist

What a grocery or mini-mart in the UAE really needs from its POS: speed, weighing, expiry, credit customers and VAT.

· 1 min read

A grocery till has one job: keep the queue moving without mistakes. Before you choose a system, check these points.

1. Speed at the counter

Barcode scanning should add an item in under a second, and the same item scanned twice should simply raise the quantity. Loose items — vegetables, rice, dates — need a quick way to enter the weight.

2. Expiry and batches

Dairy, bread and frozen goods lose money every day they sit past their date. Record the batch and expiry when goods arrive so you can sell the oldest first.

3. Credit customers

Most neighbourhood groceries keep a credit book. Your POS should put a bill on the customer's account, warn you at their credit limit and show what they owe when you pick them.

4. UAE VAT

Every bill must be a tax invoice with your TRN, in Arabic and English, and the totals should flow straight into your VAT 201 return.

5. No internet, no problem

If the connection drops at 8 pm on a Thursday, billing must carry on and sync later.

BillMate ERP's grocery template switches all of this on when you sign up. See grocery POS software.
